Kiel University Cinema

Kiel University is offering cinema events at the Audimax (main lecture hall) during the semester (almost every week). The fees are very low. During some evenings there is no entry fee if being dressed up in costumes according to the motto of the particular film. Typically, soft drinks, beer and light snacks are sold. During the breaks food can be ordered (like pizza).

Botanical Garden

The botanical garden of Kiel University is open throughout the whole year. The doors are opening at 9.00 am, the show green houses at 9.30 am. There is no entry fee. Guided tours or exhibitions can be visited.

GEOMAR Aquarium

The aquarium of the GEOMAR Helmholtz center for oceanic research provides an insight into the maritime environment of seals. Several animals, fishes and invertebrates can be seen within a beautiful landscape. Seals, playing around or sunbathing, can be observed 24h under or above water. Feeding times are at 10.00 am and 2.30 pm.

Kiel Observatory

The observatory is run by the University of Applied Sciences Kiel and located on its highest building. 

With a telescope's focal length of three meters lunar craters, a deep look into space is possible. Together with the expert team of the observatory, you can explore selected objects on clear night sky and the constellations and learn how they are linked. Besides, the observation deck provides a beautiful panoramic view of the fjord and the city of Kiel.

THW Kiel (Champion of the handball premier league)

THW Kiel is a big sports club in Kiel which is widley known for its professional handball team. It has won the German Championship tree years in a row and is the record champion of Germany (Championship and German Cup). In 2007, 2010 and 2012 it has won the International Champions League. A visit to Sparkassen Arena, the arena of THW Kiel in the center of Kiel, features a nice adventure offering a tremendous atmosphere (10,285 fans). Typical ticket prices are offered in a range of 10 to 20 euros (approximately).

Holstein Kiel (Soccer)

Holstein Kiel is the soccer club playing in the 3. German division, which is a nationwide league. The matches take place in the Holstein Stadion with a capacity of 11,386. The stadium is pretty close to field, thus offering a nice and exciting experience. Tickets for students start with an entry fee of 9 euros (staying, not roofed), up to 23 euros (seats, roofed).

Thermal Springs, Saunas and Water Worlds

Ostsee Therme (Thermal Spring Center)

The Ostsee Therme is a very popular thermal spring center located in Scharbeutz (approx. 1.5 hours away from Kiel).  Residing directly at the Baltic sea coast it features a direct view on the beach. On an area of 14,000 square meters, fitness, wellness and water world offers are provided (e.g. hot springs, saunas, indoor/outdoor pools, etc.). A direct access to the beach is given.
